Under the theme “Celebrating Creation: Marriage, Family, and the Sabbath,” Adventist counseling and theological professionals gave presentations on what a biblical lifestyle should look like in a contemporary context. The Department of Family Ministries of the General Conference (GC) of Seventh-day Adventists, in collaboration with the North American Division (NAD) of Seventh-day Adventists and Andrews University, co-sponsored the event.

The conference targeted family life leaders, pastors, students, and professionals from local churches, conferences and other Adventist institutions. Jasmine Fraser, assistant professor of discipleship in lifespan education and director of the PhD program in discipleship & lifespan education, further described ACFRP as a space for “meaningful research and dialogue,” with the end goal of promoting family healing and restoration. Attendees were given the opportunity to attend both in person and online, taking part in discussions on strategic ways to approach family therapy, family studies and family ministry.

The ACFRP had six plenary presentations and several breakout sessions over the three-day gathering. Some of the conference’s highlights were its four keynote speakers, starting with Ronny Nalin, the director of the Geoscience Research Institute. Nalin spoke for the Thursday evening program on the topic of “Uniformitarianism, Catastrophism, and God’s Agency in Nature,” pointing out how geological data and studies can provide evidence for the intentional and divine Creation found in the book of Genesis. Nalin also provided the opening plenary session on Friday, July 18, with the title “The Great Reversal: How the God of Creation Week Transforms Lives.” In it, he discussed how “Christ’s silent will to rescue” is illustrated through Creation and the rest of scripture.

On Friday afternoon, the first set of breakout sessions took place. Attendees selected from presentations given by an array of psychologists, professors and pastors from across the United States. One of the presentations was given by Elaine Oliver, associate director of the Department of Family Ministries for the GC, who spoke on “Religion, Purpose and Happiness as Predictors of Student Resilience.” Other breakout presentations spoke about post-pandemic stress on Chinese immigrants, familial anxiety, domestic violence, Sabbath rest and worship, and premarital counseling.

The third plenary session, which also served as a vespers service to open the Sabbath on Friday night, was presented by Richard Davidson, senior research professor of Old Testament interpretation at Andrews University. He spoke about Christ’s vision for relational intimacy with the topic of “God’s Creation Intent for Marriage: Heterosexual, Monogamous, and Permanent.” Using scripture, Davidson identified God’s ideal and perfect intent for His children and their romantic relationships.

On the final day of the conference, the Sabbath morning plenary was given by Hyveth Williams, director of the Doctor of Ministry program in the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary. Williams spoke about “restoring the broken,” sharing God’s appreciation for beauty and sentimentalism through Creation and the gift of the Sabbath. She also emphasized that “Sabbath wasn’t a rule but a relationship” and noted the importance of modeling spiritual relationships, especially amid a modern world of rising divorce rates, envy and violence. Williams concluded that through strengthening the values of family, marriage and the Sabbath, church members can find meaning in their lives—rather than letting “algorithms fuel the quest for purpose,” as many do through social media consumption.

In the afternoon, attendees engaged in additional breakout sessions. Andrews faculty members Ainsworth Joseph, assistant professor of discipleship and family ministries, and Kristina Freed, adjunct professor, led two sessions. Joseph spoke about helping at-risk children from a biblical perspective, and Freed shared a “blueprint for relational thriving.”

Willie Oliver, director of the Department of Family Ministries for the GC, led the third breakout session. His presentation was titled,“In the Image of God: Giving Attention to Who We Are,” and he spoke on the biblical standards for sex and marriage, citing 1 Corinthians 6:9–11 and Leviticus 18:22. He spoke against the potential harmful methods of “reparative therapy” and shared, “the Seventh-day Adventist Church is not against anyone; we are for what’s in the word of God.”

The closing keynote presentation was given by Jo Ann Davidson, senior research professor of systematic theology at Andrews. Her talk, titled “God is a romantic,” detailed the positives of a God-filled marital relationship. Davidson affirmed human sexuality and romance as a God-given blessing, illustrating the loving relationships between men and women, like Jacob and Rachel, found throughout the Bible. She also shared biblical examples of God’s immense love for His people and the church.

“The ACFRP is more than just a conference—it’s a community and a growing network of professionals, scholars and students passionate about family life and faith,” said Fraser. “It provides opportunities for continuing education, mentorship, research exposure, and real-life application in ministry and clinical settings. It’s open to individuals across backgrounds who are committed to making a difference in homes and communities.”

The next ACFRP will take place in 2027, with further details to be announced. The association serves as a space for Adventist academics, students and researchers from around the world to discuss and learn about various human-subject research ventures and best practices.

Participants attended the conference virtually via Zoom and in person on the campus of Andrews University. Presenters included Andrews students and faculty members as well as individuals from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas and the Pacific. The association and conference are supported and sponsored by Andrews University; the General Conference Office of Archives, Statistics, and Research; and the North American Division Department of Archives, Statistics & Research.

“There is perhaps no topic more urgent today than the intersection of community, health, and the gospel,” University President John Wesley Taylor stated. “These themes echo the historic calling of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, whose early pioneers recognized the inseparable link between Christ’s healing ministry and our responsibility to foster wholeness in the communities we serve.”

Following an opening banquet on Thursday evening, presentations continued the next day. On Friday morning, Safary Wa-Mbaleka, research and evaluation manager at the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, gave a devotional on Psalms 51:10, instructing those gathered to let God “create in [them] a clean heart,” as they conduct research and look to avoid ethical and moral infractions.

After Wa-Mbaleka’s devotional, keynote speaker Philip Jenkins, professor of history at Baylor University, identified various points in history where natural disasters intersected with religious revivals. The rest of the day featured parallel breakout sessions with research presentations on religious beliefs and behavior, language, leadership, faith, social systems, inclusion, education, finances, trauma and mental health.

The following day featured a devotional by Arceli H. Rosario, president of the Adventist University of the Philippines. The keynote address was delivered by Katia Garcia Reinert, associate director of Adventist Health Ministries, who emphasized the importance of Adventists continuing to do research and encouraging one another through their research efforts. The breakouts that followed covered the topics of evangelism, technology, mental health and Adventist beliefs.

To close the conference, attendees celebrated the Sabbath together by participating in a Sabbath School panel discussion about results from the Global Church Member Survey organized by the General Conference in 2023. This was followed by a sermon by Dwight Nelson, Seventh-day Adventist evangelist and author, and a specially prepared lunch in the commons of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary.

“This gathering affirms our belief that rigorous research—rooted in compassion, ethics, and faith—can contribute to healing, justice, and growth in our communities,” stated Petr Činčala, AHSRA president, associate professor of world mission, and director of the Institute of Church Ministry and the Doctor of Missiology program at Andrews.

“In addition to the plenary presentations, we had about 60 presentations in three break-out rooms over two days, which was the highest number of presentations we’ve ever had,” he said. “Our conference was intentionally made hybrid to accommodate our international colleagues, and I was glad and proud to see presentations from places like Thailand or Australia, where they were presenting after midnight, their time.” Participants included experienced Adventist social science researchers as well as researchers active in the study of Adventists.

Over the past 13 years, AHSRA has seen dramatic growth. Before the association’s formation, only a few researchers were recognized for contributing to sociological studies on behalf of Adventism. Today, AHSRA’s community includes hundreds of researchers, with active chapters in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America.

Činčala shared that the growth is expected to continue, with an AHSRA Oceania chapter currently in development. Attendance at the 2025 AHSRA conference was also encouraging, with an increased number of virtual attendees as well as international participants who visited Michigan before proceeding to Missouri for the 2025 General Conference Session.

In the future, Činčala hopes that AHSRA’s members, in conjunction with the church and its universities, will continue to study social matters of importance to the Adventist denomination. The next AHSRA conference will be held in 2026 at Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee. Interpretative Issues of the Apocalypse and Its Reception in Antiquity and Late Antiquity” at the University of Zurich.

Having studied the Book of Revelation, apocalyptic literature, the New Testament and early Christianity, Kuryliak has comprehensive experience in theological and philosophical research and has over 10 published articles in peer-reviewed journals. His dissertation focuses on biblical hermeneutics—the study and methodology of interpreting biblical texts—concerning the book of Revelation as an apocalyptic text.

The four major hermeneutical approaches mentioned in the dissertation title have been utilized throughout history to varying 果冻传媒app and combinations. The approach of preterism views the apocalyptic events of Revelation as having happened at the time of its writing during the first century. In contrast, an idealist approach emphasizes the struggle between good and evil, portraying the Apocalypse as a symbolic event from which individuals can take practical implications. Historicism views the events of Revelation as a prophetic account of the happenings in church history between its writing and the second coming of Jesus Christ. Lastly, a futurist approach views Revelation as a prophecy of events at the end of Earth’s history.

Kuryliak explores the critical involvement of each approach in shaping the early church’s interpretations of Revelation from the second to seventh centuries. “To some extent, all early Christians combined preterist, idealist, historicist, and futurist perspectives. Although commentators used different combinations of hermeneutical approaches, none denied the prophetic nature of the Apocalypse and its connection to history. The findings of the study highlight not only the enduring relevance of Revelation’s symbols in various contexts, but also the role of exegetical diversity in reflecting the book’s profound theological dimensions,” he explains.

Kuryliak’s recent completion of doctoral studies in theology at the University of Zurich follows an extensive educational background, including a Bachelor of Theology from the Ukrainian Adventist Theological Institute, a Bachelor of Philosophy in religious studies from the Ukrainian Institute of Arts and Sciences, a Master of Religious Studies from the National University of Ostroh Academy, and a Master of Arts in religion and post-graduate certificate in Ellen G. White and Adventist studies from Andrews University. While pursuing his PhD, he also spent time at Aarhus University in Aarhus, Denmark, and the University of Oxford in Oxford, England, as a visiting scholar.
Thu, 17 Jul 2025 11:07:25 +0000 Andrews Welcomes Chaplain Jonathan Fetrick http://www.andrews.edu/agenda/67497
After a thoughtful search process, Andrews University welcomes new University Chaplain Jonathan Fetrick to the Center for Faith Engagement team. Both students benefited from participating in heliophysics research projects funded by NASA and NSF under the guidance of Johnson. “While undergraduates, Wesley and Noah were already doing work at the level of graduate students and gave impressive talks at international conferences and specialized NASA working groups and were able to network with teams of scientists specializing in space physics,” Johnson notes. Another student from the class of 2025, Yoel Kim, will also be starting a doctoral program in physics at The Ohio State University this fall.

Recent graduate Jamie Shepard will begin a PhD in mathematics at the University of Tennessee this fall. Additionally, in 2024, alumni Alex Navarro and Moises Reyes Rivas began PhD programs in mathematics at the University of Maryland and the University of California, Los Angeles, respectively. The year prior, Noe Reyes Rivas started his PhD in applied mathematics at Brown University.

Shepard, Navarro, and Moises and Noe Reyes Rivas all participated in undergraduate research experiences through the mathematics department. In doing so, they were able to present their findings at several conferences, including the Joint Mathematics Meetings, the largest annual meeting of mathematicians in the world. Noe Reyes Rivas reflects, “Thanks to Andrews’ holistic education, strong spiritual foundation, and the support of my professors, I have excelled in my field.”

Yosia Nurhan and Jonathan Homan, who both graduated with dual 果冻传媒app in mathematics and physics, also benefited from research at Andrews, working on NASA-funded projects that allowed them to publish original research on space physics while they were still undergraduates. They are now pursuing PhDs in applied mathematics at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Colorado Boulder, respectively, and continue to collaborate with Johnson on research. Several other alumni are also completing doctorates in the mathematical sciences, including Christiane and Dorothea Gallos (mathematics, Indiana University Bloomington), Lucinda Ford (mathematics education, Texas State University) and Mykhaylo Malakhov (biostatistics, University of Minnesota).

In addition to these student successes, nearly 100 Andrews undergraduates have been accepted to medical school over the past five years, with an acceptance rate 10% higher than the national average. These students benefited from research experiences with Andrews faculty in molecular and cellular biology, physiology, and ecology. Moreover, several Andrews alumni have placed in highly competitive veterinary programs. Graduates Karyl Beal and Carolina Smith earned their bachelor’s 果冻传媒app in animal science from Andrews in 2024 and have been accepted to doctoral programs in veterinary medicine at the University of Illinois and the University of Tennessee, respectively. Additionally, recent graduate Jessica Dibble is beginning her doctoral studies at the Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine this fall.

Many of these students conducted their undergraduate research experiences as part of the J.N. Andrews Honors Program, which culminates in a capstone research project. In carrying out these projects, students “apply their critical thinking and analytical skills to research questions in their majors, developing well-conceived investigative methodologies and strengthening their ability to communicate precise scientific discoveries to an interdisciplinary audience,” explains L. Monique Pittman, professor of English and director of Honors.

The successful placement of these students into top STEM doctoral programs reflects Andrews University’s commitment to prepare undergraduate students for a variety of in-demand STEM careers and advanced scientific study in the context of its mission to seek knowledge, affirm faith and change the world.

To learn more about studying at Andrews University, please visit Enrollment.

If you’re interested in joining the Andrews University team, please see the list of available positions.

We invite you to support the Andrews University mission by making a donation.

Please read more about great things happening at Andrews University here.
Fri, 11 Jul 2025 11:41:44 +0000 Andrews Alumnus Inspires Seniors to Get Active http://www.andrews.edu/agenda/67482
At 73 years old, Ron du Preez, an Andrews University alumnus, pastor and lifelong advocate for healthy living, is walking and cycling his way across America. As part of his national campaign, Senior Strides, du Preez is traveling to all 50 U.S. states in 50 days, completing 50 kilometers (31.07 miles) each day to raise awareness about senior health.

On Friday, June 20, day 37 of his journey, du Preez returned to the campus of Andrews University, where he earned four graduate 果冻传媒app between 1978 and 1993. “It’s full circle,” he says. “I began my fitness journey here at Andrews where I began swimming in the pool, running my first 10-mile race and working as an editor for the student paper. Being back here brings it all together.”

Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, du Preez moved to the U.S. in 1976 to begin his studies at Andrews. Over the next two decades, he completed a Master of Arts in religion, a Master of Arts in education, a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry. He currently serves as a pastor in Beaumont, California.

It's du Preez’s commitment to promoting healthy aging that ultimately drives his mission. According to recent health studies, fewer than 15% of Americans aged 65 and older engage in the recommended amount of aerobic and muscle strengthening activities. Acknowledging the 50 million older adults in the United States who don’t meet these fitness benchmarks, du Preez says he hopes to be a source of motivation. “My goal is to energize, empower and encourage others. Especially those over 65, to live vibrantly and healthfully,” he shares.

Du Preez began his journey on May 15, 2025, in Honolulu, Hawaii, followed by a trip to Alaska the next day. Since then, he and his support team—including a driver, cook and media coordinator—have traveled across the United States. Each day involves completing 50 kilometers by walking and/or cycling, attending media interviews and visiting senior centers. At each center, du Preez delivers motivational presentations and distributes literature about the importance of wellness and healthy living.

Although his original plan involved walking all 50 kilometers daily, the demands of travel, public engagement and logistical constraints led to a shift. “To visit with seniors and get to the next state on time, biking became the practical choice,” du Preez says.

Throughout his journey, du Preez’s core message has remained consistent: Begin with manageable steps, maintain a steady routine and find enjoyment in movement. “People often say, ‘You’re doing 50K, I could never do that,’” he explains. “But I tell them, just walk around the block. Find something you enjoy. And don’t aim for perfection, aim for regularity.”

Despite the physical toll, including recurring blisters, sore muscles and a recent cold, du Preez has not missed a single day. “I’m still out here doing 50K a day because the mission matters,” he states.

Looking ahead, du Preez is already setting new personal goals. He hopes to participate in the 100th Comrades Marathon, a 56-mile ultramarathon in South Africa, when he turns 75. He is also exploring the possibility of producing a documentary or launching a podcast to extend the mission of Senior Strides beyond this summer.

According to du Preez, his effort is not solely about physical fitness. “Jesus said, ‘I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly,’” he notes. “That’s what I’m promoting, an abundant life, physically and spiritually.”

For more information about Senior Strides or for information about supporting the project, visit www.seniorstrides.org or follow the initiative on Instagram at @SeniorStrides50K.

To learn more about studying at Andrews University, please visit Enrollment.

If you're interested in joining the Andrews University team, please see the list of available positions.

We invite you to support the Andrews University mission by making a donation.

Please read more about great things happening at Andrews University here.
Thu, 10 Jul 2025 10:55:13 +0000
